The Captive Audience of Pain

As I post this I am in pain.  A mechanical break down of my body.  Nothing of the sort such as cancer, or anything that would bring death to my body.  Just back pain...  We all have back pain at some point in our life.  We all experience pain.  It is just part of our lives.  The question is, what if we don't feel pain?  What are we?  Are we alive?

As I stated, pain is part of who we are.  We were born into pain and we typically die with pain.  I will surmise that pain lets us know that we are alive.  We are taught that pain is a response to stimuli.  The saying goes if you put your had to fire, you will pull away.  What if there is no fire and we have pain anyway?  Some people live with a disease called fibromyalgia.  Although there is no understanding of what is going on with this disease, it is basically an anomaly in the body that give a person intense pain.  Most doctors will recommend antidepressants for treatment.  Some will refer the patients to counselors to help with this.  I did not start this to discuss the merits of this chronic pain, but I bring it up to so that pain happens, even when we don't know why.

Recently, I have been talking to my clients about pain.  I have been reminding them that pain let them know that you are alive.  What would we do without pain?  There is a condition called congenital insensitivity.  This means that you can't feel what is happening to your body when it is receiving  outside stimulus.  Can you imagine this?  Your body could literally be on fire and yet you would not feel it.  I honestly can't imagine not being able to feel what is happening to my body.

Now to why I am writing this.  We are meant to feel pain.  We are told that we need to take certain medications to relieve ourselves of pain and we have bought into it.  How many people are on some type of narcotic pain reliever?  Probably more than you could imagine.  For some reason we have bought into the idea that we must mask pain.  We are to remain in a stasis between minimal pain and numb.  If we experience pain, we want it to be quick and relatively minimal.

If we were created to feel pain why do we run from it?  Why do we look for way to dull it?  Don't get me wrong, some people live with such chronic pain that it is unbearable.  Fortunately, for me and those I know, I don't know many of those people.  So if we are to feel pain, lets begin with these assumptions.

1.  Pain is good for the body
2.  Pain lets us know that we are alive
3.  Without pain, we are probably depressed
4.  Some pain is psychological and can be relieved
5.  Pain can be overwhelming at times
6.  Pain free is a myth
7.  Since we were created to experience pain, we should embrace it
8.  Compassion is needed with pain, even when we can't explain it

Pain is not an easy subject by any means.  There are so many psychological effects associated with pain.  This is not meant to be an exhaustive breakdown of pain and how we should live with it.  It was created to give us a different perspective of pain since we experience it everyday.
